Tanks rumble and artillery fires echo across northern Michigan as more than 9,000 service members rehearse maneuvers and sustainment operations for a battlefield military leaders say is changing rapidly.

Large-Scale, Joint Readiness
Northern Strike 26-2 — one of the nation’s largest reserve-component readiness exercises — brought participants from 36 states and territories and five international contingents to training areas around Grayling in August 2026. The summer iteration is the largest since the exercise began in 2012, according to the Michigan National Guard.

Expansive Training Environment
The drill uses more than 200,000 acres of land and integrates air, maritime, space and cyber capabilities into combined-arms scenarios. Units practiced maneuver warfare, live-fire artillery sequences and coordinated attacks designed to improve interoperability across branches and with allied partners.

“Test and Innovate”
Brig. Gen. Ravindra Wagh of the Michigan National Guard said lessons from recent conflicts around the globe are reshaping training priorities. “You see what's happening in Ukraine right now. You see what's happening globally with some of our other emerging conflicts,” Wagh said. “This is a place where you can test and innovate.”

Technology and Industry Partnerships
Nearly 90 industry partners joined the exercise, giving troops access to emerging systems before they appear on future battlefields. Demonstrations and tests included autonomous resupply vehicles, drones used to deliver blood and medical supplies, unmanned systems for casualty assessment and battlefield data relay, and on-site 3D printing to produce replacement parts and adapt equipment in the field.
Sustainment and Realistic Logistics
Northern Strike also emphasized sustainment. The 445th Quartermaster Company ran shower and laundry operations to support soldiers in the field; Company Commander Captain Kelson said their mission is to strengthen morale and provide logistical backing for the units conducting combat operations. For junior troops like Pfc. William Flores of Trenton, New Jersey, the exercise serves as a rehearsal for potential deployment: “This is like a practice run,” he said.
Faster Innovation, Better Readiness
Organizers said the rapid pace of technological and tactical change requires frequent testing and accelerated innovation. Northern Strike offers a controlled environment to evaluate new concepts, refine tactics and raise units’ readiness. “I hope they're a little bit better, a little bit more capable,” Wagh said. “We want all of our units to have a higher, more capable state of readiness.”
Northern Strike 26-2 continues through Aug. 14 and features combined training across land, sea, air and cyber domains to prepare participating forces for evolving threats.
