Chaos in Kosovo Parliament: MP Hurls Eggs at Acting PM After Request for More Time on Presidential Vote

An opposition lawmaker in Kosovo's assembly threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a heated plenary session when he asked for extra time to consult on a presidential nomination.

Alliance Party MP Time Kadrijaj produced at least four brown eggs from her bag and launched them toward Kurti while shouting "Shame, shame!" The episode ended only after other lawmakers and police moved in; the incident forced the parliament to suspend its session.

Kurtí — the 51-year-old acting prime minister — said he was "happy to pay this price" to secure additional time for negotiations with opposition parties.

Political Context

The outburst highlights deep political fragmentation in Kosovo. Kurti's Vetevendosje party won the most seats in the June election and leads the government, but it still needs a two-thirds parliamentary majority to elect a president. Negotiations between Kurti and opposition parties have so far failed to produce a consensus candidate, producing a familiar stalemate that has contributed to repeated disruptions in the assembly.

Previous Incidents

The assembly has seen other violent or chaotic scenes in recent years. Members of Kurti's party previously set off tear gas in the chamber when they were in opposition. In 2023, while Kurti was speaking, Democratic Party deputy Mergim Lushtaku threw a bottle of water at him, a move that triggered a large brawl as more MPs joined in.

Rival MPs have threatened legal action over Kurti's bid to delay a speaker's election to allow more time for talks, and it remains unclear whether that delay will be permitted.
