The European Medicines Agency has authorised Pfizer and BioNTech’s updated 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine, formulated to target the XFG variant and approved for use from six months of age. Built on BioNTech’s mRNA platform—used in more than five billion doses worldwide—the vaccine showed reassuring safety and a strong antibody response against multiple circulating strains. Production is already under way ahead of fall/winter, and data are being submitted to international health authorities.

European regulators have formally approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s updated 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine formulation. The shot is designed to protect against the XFG lineage, which accounted for nearly three-quarters of global infections at its peak in October 2025, and is authorised for use in people aged six months and older.

mRNA Platform and Safety

Built on BioNTech’s proprietary messenger RNA (mRNA) platform, the underlying technology has now been used in more than five billion doses worldwide. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) reviewed clinical data submitted by the partners and concluded that the updated formulation demonstrated reassuring safety outcomes and a robust antibody response against currently circulating strains, including XFG, NB.1.8.1, XFG.1.1, PQ.2.8.1 and PQ.17.

Scope Of Authorisation And Production

The marketing authorisation covers all 27 European Union member states as well as Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway. According to the EMA announcement, production of the revised formula is already under way to prepare supplies for the coming fall and winter season. Pfizer and BioNTech are also submitting the relevant data packages to international health agencies to support broader regulatory reviews.
