A routine traffic stop for a vehicle code violation on Interstate 5 in Fresno County resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of suspected cocaine, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
What Happened
CHP Coalinga officers stopped a 2019 Honda Ridgeline on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after observing a vehicle code violation. During the encounter, officers reported seeing several indicators consistent with criminal activity. The driver consented to a search of the vehicle.
The subsequent search uncovered multiple packages of suspected narcotics. CHP photos show 25 packages stacked on the hood of a patrol vehicle; the agency described the packages as 25-kilogram bundles. The seized material was turned over to the Fresno High Impact Investigations Team, and testing confirmed the substance was cocaine. CHP estimated the street value of the seizure at about $2.5 million.
Both the driver and a passenger were arrested; their names were not released by authorities.

Authorities noted two similar interdictions in recent weeks. On May 29, 2026, a Siskiyou County Sheriff's deputy stopped a 2022 Mazda CX-5 for a mechanical violation and ultimately discovered an aftermarket false compartment containing suspected narcotics. A K-9 alerted, and deputies recovered roughly 19 kilograms of suspected cocaine, which the sheriff's office estimated at about $1.9 million.
Separately, on July 25, 2026 — a day before the Fresno stop — Putnam County deputies in New York stopped a black GMC SUV on Interstate 84 after observing multiple traffic violations. Deputies reported signs the driver, identified as 35-year-old Reynalda G. Sierra Mejia, may have been impaired by drugs. A search uncovered 51 pounds of vacuum-sealed cannabis and a quantity of a substance that tested positive for ketamine. Mejia was charged with first-degree possession of cannabis and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, among other counts.
Investigation Continues
The recovered Fresno County narcotics are being processed by investigative teams. CHP and partnering agencies continue efforts to identify sources and networks involved in the transportation of illegal drugs through the region.
