Rep. Robert Garcia has sent a formal letter to Taylor Farms CEO Bruce Taylor seeking communications and internal documents about the company’s role in a nationwide cyclospora outbreak and whether political donations or White House meetings influenced the FDA inquiry. Reporting ties the outbreak to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell and names Taylor Farms de Mexico as the supplier; a voluntary recall affects 27 states. The CDC links nearly 2,000 confirmed cases to the outbreak, the White House denies any improper influence, and the FDA continues an evidence-based investigation despite a retracted lab result.
Rep. Robert Garcia Demands Answers From Taylor Farms Over Cyclospora Outbreak and Possible Political Interference

Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a formal letter to Taylor Farms CEO Bruce Taylor earlier this week seeking detailed information about the company's role in a nationwide cyclospora outbreak and whether political donations or White House access influenced the Food and Drug Administration's investigation into contaminated lettuce.
What Garcia Is Requesting
In the letter, Garcia asks Taylor Farms to produce all communications with federal agencies related to the outbreak — including the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USDA and the White House — as well as internal records and documents describing the company’s food-safety protocols and investigative steps taken after the outbreak was identified.
"Taylor Farms donated millions to President Trump, met privately with the White House the night the FDA identified their lettuce as the source of this outbreak, and then reportedly tried to distance themselves from this outbreak," Representative Robert Garcia said in a statement. "Thousands of Americans became sick. Trust in our public health system is on the line."
Allegations and Reporting
Reporting by CBS News, citing Federal Election Commission filings, says Taylor Farms contributed $1 million to the Trump-aligned super PAC MAGA Inc. in 2025. Bloomberg reported the company's total contributions that year exceeded $2 million to political committees tied to Trump and other Republican figures.
The CDC reported that the outbreak has been linked to nearly 2,000 confirmed cases across nine states, while state health departments in 41 states have logged additional illnesses, according to Bloomberg. The FDA traced the cluster of illnesses to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia and identified Taylor Farms de Mexico as the supplier. Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce distributed across 27 states.
Agency Responses and Ongoing Investigation
The White House rejected suggestions of improper influence. White House spokesman Kush Desai said: "Any notion that the White House or Trump administration would ever compromise on the health and safety of the American people is absolutely false." Desai added that the FDA "is conducting a thorough and evidence-based outbreak investigation" and has not reversed its epidemiological findings pointing to Taylor Farms de Mexico.
A Taylor Farms spokesperson declined to address Garcia's letter directly but told CBS News that "the safety of our food is paramount," and noted the FDA had recorded no confirmed positive cyclospora test results as of July 24.
Complicating the investigation, the FDA at one point reported a positive cyclospora result on a Taylor Farms lettuce sample but later characterized that result as a false positive. Despite the revision, the company’s voluntary recall remains in effect while federal and state health officials continue their epidemiological and laboratory work.
What Comes Next
Garcia's request for records aims to determine whether political contributions or private meetings affected the response timeline or the integrity of the federal investigation. The FDA and CDC continue to investigate the outbreak, and Congress may use the materials Garcia requested to assess whether policy or oversight changes are warranted to protect public health.
