Costa Rica arrested Alejandro Arias-Monge, aka "Diablo," a 41-year-old fugitive wanted by the United States on drug-trafficking charges and the subject of a $500,000 U.S. reward.

The arrest followed an hourlong clash that injured six OIJ agents—one remains in serious condition—and resulted in two additional arrests and the seizure of high-powered firearms.

The DEA says his network trafficked narcotics from Colombia through Central America into Mexico and the U.S.; local media link him to as many as 100 killings.

Costa Rica has arrested its most-wanted fugitive, Alejandro Arias-Monge, 41, known as "Diablo," officials announced Friday, ending a years-long manhunt tied to U.S. drug-trafficking charges.

Arias-Monge was detained after an hourlong confrontation that injured six agents from the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ); one agent remains in serious condition, authorities said. Two suspected accomplices were also arrested, and law enforcement recovered weapons, including high-powered firearms.

The U.S. Department of State placed a $500,000 reward on Arias-Monge last year, identifying him as the alleged leader of a violent transnational criminal organization responsible for smuggling narcotics into the United States. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said the network operated across all seven provinces of Costa Rica and moved drugs from Colombia through Honduras and Guatemala into Mexico, with the U.S. as the final destination.

Costa Rican prosecutors say Arias-Monge faces multiple domestic arrest warrants. Local media report he had been a fugitive since 2016 and is suspected of involvement in as many as 100 homicides. The DEA also alleges that members of his syndicate used social media to post violent images and videos to intimidate local communities.

Official Reaction and Next Steps

"This operation is an example of the intense work carried out by the Judicial Power to eradicate crime in the country," the OIJ said in a social media statement praising the raid. Authorities have not released the precise location of the capture or the identities of the other detainees; coordination with U.S. investigators is expected as legal proceedings continue.
