The event, staged in a campaign-style format, was presented as an effort to reassure Americans ahead of the midterm elections that the administration is de-emphasizing a broader war with Tehran.
O’Reilly noted that oil prices have begun to ease and the Strait of Hormuz is reopening after an interim agreement intended to reduce hostilities with Iran — developments he said the president should highlight as direct benefits for American households.
“He’s got to reinforce that the oil and gas are going to get better, people’s lives are going to get easier, and that I guess he’ll say that the Iranian situation is going to get better,”
O’Reilly said on On Balance.
O’Reilly added that while he believes the U.S. acted appropriately toward Iran, the political and economic consequences have not unfolded exactly as the administration anticipated. He also criticized energy companies for not passing market-driven price reductions on to consumers quickly enough.
Separately, O’Reilly discussed the president’s decision to delay signing a bipartisan housing affordability bill. Trump informed senators he would withhold his signature until the SAVE America Act is passed — a move O’Reilly described as leverage tied to the administration’s election-integrity priorities.
The president has previously postponed other agenda items while pressing for the SAVE America Act, including delaying a nominee for director of national intelligence and pausing action on FISA-related national security legislation.
The Senate this week approved a House-passed resolution directing the president to withdraw U.S. armed forces from hostilities against Iran. O’Reilly, however, said he does not expect that development to limit how Trump approaches the situation with Tehran.
“Trump will be able to do what he wants in Iran, no matter what the War Powers Act says,” O’Reilly predicted, adding that the president will continue operations until the situation reaches a critical threshold.
