A routine shoplifting response at the Trader Joe's on Nob Hill in San Francisco ended in tragedy Friday morning when a fleeing suspect and two pursuing police officers were struck by a passing vehicle. The adult male suspect later died from his injuries; both officers were hospitalized with leg injuries and are expected to recover.
The collision occurred just before 8 a.m. at the corner of California and Hyde streets. According to police and surveillance footage, officers confronted a non-cooperative suspect who fled on foot. The pursuit spilled into the roadway and officers tackled the suspect as a dark gray Lexus rounded the corner and struck all three men. One officer was pinned beneath the vehicle and both were knocked to the pavement.
Officials and investigation: San Francisco Police Officers Association president Louis Wong described the encounter before the crash as a "violent struggle," underscoring how physically intense the confrontation had become prior to the vehicle impact. SFPD spokesperson Robert Rueca said investigators were still conducting interviews and processing the scene when he spoke with reporters.
The Lexus driver has been cooperating with investigators and, according to police, appears to have had no prior connection to the incident at the store. Authorities say investigators will examine speed, visibility and vehicle positioning to determine whether any traffic violations occurred. Under California law, drivers who strike pedestrians in an active roadway or crosswalk can face liability even when they are not otherwise involved in the underlying incident.
Unrelated earlier incident: Fire crews had been called to the Trader Joe's parking lot roughly an hour earlier for a separate Tesla fire that was extinguished in under ten minutes; the vehicle was later returned to its owner. Officials do not believe the Tesla fire was connected to the crash, but the earlier response and the ongoing investigation contributed to a chaotic scene that briefly halted a nearby cable car while evidence was collected.
Police have not released the suspect's name or confirmed what, if anything, he allegedly stole. The investigation into the collision and the circumstances of the theft remains active, and no charges have been filed against the Lexus driver as of this writing.
