Multiple people were wounded Saturday afternoon when shots were fired inside Haywood Mall, the largest shopping center in South Carolina, Greenville police said.
The Greenville Police Department reported the incident occurred around 1 p.m. Two victims were taken to a hospital for treatment; their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
Police said several individuals are in custody and described the scene as "active but contained," according to a department spokesperson. Officials added there is no ongoing danger to the public, but it may take some time before first responders can fully clear the area.
Shoppers were spotted outside the mall after the alleged shooting.
The Greenville City Fire Department and other law enforcement agencies assisted with evacuations while officers secured the mall perimeter. Greenlink, the city's public transit system, provided an air-conditioned bus so evacuees could stay cool.
Haywood Mall will remain closed for an undetermined period as investigators work the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office had not immediately responded to requests for additional comment.
