Bayeux Tapestry Arrives in Britain: National 'Bayeux Around Britain' Programme Launched Ahead of London Exhibition

A national programme has been launched to mark the arrival of the 70-metre Bayeux Tapestry in the UK from Bayeux, France — an event taking place for the first time in nearly a millennium. The tapestry is due to travel to the British Museum in London in July and will be on public display from September for several months.

Nationwide events to accompany the loan

The launch of the "Bayeux Around Britain" programme took place at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery on Friday, where organisers outlined plans to take the story of the tapestry beyond Bloomsbury and into communities across the country.

"Since this loan was announced last year, we have been committed to making this a significant cultural moment for the whole of the UK," said Dr Nicholas Cullinan, director of the British Museum. "The Bayeux Around Britain programme will help ensure that this once-in-a-generation exhibition is not confined to Bloomsbury but accessible to tens of millions of people around the country."

The tapestry, which measures 70 metres (229 ft), depicts the events leading up to and including the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Local displays and education initiatives

As part of regional celebrations tied to its return to England, Hastings Museum will host a special loan from the British Museum: the Stothart Cast. The cast features images of Harold Godwinson, William the Conqueror and a medieval knight based on wax impressions taken from the original tapestry.

Hastings will also display the Hastings Embroidery at Hastings Town Hall — a piece created in 1966 to mark the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

On 14 October 2026 the British Museum plans to broadcast a live, curriculum-linked schools event into hundreds of classrooms nationwide to bring the tapestry’s story to life, a museum spokesperson said. The museum will also provide a free packed lunch to every pupil who attends the London exhibition on a school visit.

Media coverage and community engagement

The BBC has announced special TV and radio coverage, including a new documentary for BBC Two and iPlayer that will follow the tapestry’s journey from Bayeux to London, plus a dedicated day of documentaries, discussions and drama on BBC Radio 4.

Local primary school pupils joined the launch in Hastings: "I'm very excited because I think it will be a very interesting thing to discover," said Imogen. Her sister Romana added, "I'm excited to go up and see it in September."

Helena Dollimore, Member of Parliament for Hastings and Rye, said she had worked closely with the British Museum and government to ensure local communities and schoolchildren were part of the national programme. "I'm delighted that children from 1066 Country will now receive free priority tickets for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition," she said.

Organisers say the Bayeux Around Britain initiative aims to make the historic textile’s visit as inclusive and educational as possible, coordinating local museum displays, school events and national broadcasting to maximise access and engagement while the tapestry is on loan.
