The European Union on Tuesday pledged an additional €16.5 million to support efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The package targets testing capacity, surveillance and frontline protection to help slow transmission and protect health workers.

€5 million in testing equipment will be deployed to improve diagnostic capacity. Another €5 million will be provided to the World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen surveillance systems and ensure access to critical supplies such as personal protective equipment. A further €6.5 million will support an Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) initiative to equip and train frontline health workers.
"This is about more than containing a virus. It is about proving that when lives are at stake, the world can still come together and act," EU Crisis Commissioner Hadja Lahbi said after meeting frontline health teams in the DRC.
"Health security is a shared responsibility: viruses do not stop at borders; they do not care about politics," she added.
Current Situation and Context
Officials reported that the death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC has risen to more than 100. Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness transmitted through direct physical contact and contact with infected bodily fluids. Strengthening testing, surveillance and protection for health workers are key priorities to curb further spread.
In May, the European Commission already announced €15 million in humanitarian assistance for the regions affected by the outbreak, bringing the EU's recent total support to the response to €31.5 million.
