At least one person has been killed and five others wounded after a series of shootings near Kochav Ya'ir, north-east of Tel Aviv, emergency services said on Sunday.
Police described the incidents as a possible terrorist attack. Authorities said they seized the vehicle of a suspected attacker and that a man was shot dead during the operation. Israeli news site ynet reported that the deceased suspect was an Arab citizen of Israel; police said they are still searching for a second suspected perpetrator.
According to the Magen David Adom ambulance service, the first shots were fired at a petrol station near Kochav Ya'ir, where two people were reportedly injured. Further gunshot victims were later reported at two nearby locations.
Medics pronounced a 35-year-old man dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. Of the five wounded, two are said to be in serious condition, while others sustained less severe injuries.
Numerous police units and emergency teams were deployed as searches and security operations continued across the area. Authorities have not yet released details about a possible motive or the identity of the deceased suspect pending an official investigation.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a briefing on the situation, his office said, as investigators and security forces coordinated the response. The shootings occurred in towns close to the border with the occupied West Bank, an area that has seen repeated attacks in recent years.
