Poland is facing a wave of false emergency reports, including a hoax fire call on Saturday that prompted firefighters to force entry into an apartment in Gdansk registered to a member of President Karol Nawrocki's family, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
Tusk convened the Government Security Center early Sunday after the incident and described it as part of a recent pattern of malicious false alarms intended to create disruption and anxiety.
The Interior Ministry said an emergency notification centre received a report of a fire at the apartment overnight. Emergency services were dispatched and firefighters elected to forcefully enter the flat. The premises were empty; no fire hazard or injured persons were found.
An Interior Ministry spokesperson said: "The apartment was inspected and found no fire hazard or injured persons, as the premises were empty. Due to the situation, the police are conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators."
Tusk praised the firefighters' swift response but said procedures for identifying and handling false alarms must be reviewed to prevent unnecessary risk and resource diversion. On the social platform X he wrote:
"The provocateurs' actions are aimed at national security. At all of us. We will use all available methods to identify and apprehend the saboteurs, regardless of where they come from or who directs them."
Police have opened an investigation to trace the origin of the hoax call and identify those responsible. Authorities said they will employ all available methods to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.
