A pro-Trump political action committee in Kentucky released an AI-generated attack ad this week that implies Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is part of a romantic "throuple" with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). The spot, produced by MAGA Kentucky PAC, includes fabricated images of Massie holding hands with Omar and of the three lawmakers dining together, while a bottom-screen disclaimer reads: "This satirical ad was created using Artificial Intelligence."
The ad opens with the line, "Thomas Massie caught in a throuple! In Washington, he's cheating with the Squad on the America First movement," and ends by urging Kentucky voters to back Massie's Trump-backed primary opponent. MAGA Kentucky was formed to oppose Massie after his objections to what the group calls the "Big Beautiful Bill." Initial funding for the PAC reportedly included donations from GOP megadonor Paul Singer, hedge fund manager John Paulson and a PAC tied to Miriam Adelson.
Massie publicly shared the ad and denounced it as false, calling it "disgusting and defamatory" and accusing the PAC's backers of using the spot to sway older voters who might not recognize it as AI-generated. He also used his post to solicit campaign donations.
"This FAKE AI campaign ad LYING about Thomas Massie is a violation of The TAKE IT DOWN Act that First Lady Melania Trump championed, we voted for, and President Trump signed into law nearly a year ago!!!" Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote when sharing Massie's post, adding that Massie "NEVER dined, held hands with, or intimately engaged with AOC and Ilhan Omar."
Greene cited the TAKE IT DOWN Act, which criminalizes knowingly publishing or threatening to publish intimate images of minors or non-consenting adults and explicitly covers AI-generated imagery. The law requires websites and social platforms to remove such material within 48 hours after a victim notifies them. Greene urged Massie to pursue legal action against the PAC’s major donors and anyone involved in making or distributing the ad.
The controversy comes as Kentucky's GOP primary approaches on May 19. Public polling is limited, but a recent Big Data Poll showed Massie leading his Trump-backed primary challenger, Ed Gallrein, 52% to 48%—a margin that falls within the survey's 4-point margin of error. Greene also attacked Gallrein on social media, accusing him of avoiding debates and calling him "too timid" to face Massie in public forums.
Observers note the case highlights growing legal and ethical questions about AI-generated political content and the enforcement challenges platforms face when dealing with manipulated imagery in campaign ads.
