A 26-year-old Chicago man, Alphanso Tally, has been charged with 20 felonies after authorities say he opened fire while being escorted through Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital over the weekend, killing one police officer and critically wounding another.
What happened
Tally was initially arrested Saturday in connection with an alleged armed robbery, the Chicago Police Department said. Officers brought him to the hospital for medical treatment, where a hospital spokesperson said he was screened with a metal-detection wand and remained under law enforcement supervision.
According to police, while in the emergency department Tally obtained a firearm and began shooting. Both officers were transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. One officer was pronounced dead at the hospital; the other remains critically ill and is described as fighting for his life.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers officers face and noted that the filing of charges represents the first step toward accountability.
Flight, capture and evidence
After the shooting, police say Tally fled the hospital and later entered a private residence several blocks away. Local authorities and SWAT teams surrounded the home and took him into custody. Superintendent Snelling said investigators recovered a "third weapon" during the response.
Charges and investigation
Tally now faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, among a total of 20 felony counts. Authorities have not said whether he has retained legal counsel. Investigators are continuing to probe how the suspect obtained a firearm while in custody and under hospital supervision.
The department has not released the officers' names. Officials said the slain officer was 38 and had served roughly 10 years with the department; the wounded officer is 57 and had about 21 years of service. Mayor Brandon Johnson called the shooting a tragedy and thanked officers for their service.
