Marwan Barghouti, jailed in Israel for 24 years and hailed by supporters as the "Nelson Mandela of Palestine," remains an influential symbol of Palestinian aspirations. His son, Arab Barghouti, says Marwan could unify factions and lead a "democratic renewal," despite a life sentence and reports of deteriorating health. Israeli authorities deny recent allegations of assaults in prison. The family continues to campaign for his release while insisting he still supports a two-state solution and hopes for Palestinian unity.
Jailed Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti Could Lead 'Democratic Renewal,' Son Says

Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian leader imprisoned in Israel for 24 years, remains a potent symbol for many Palestinians and, his son says, could spearhead a "democratic renewal" if freed. Supporters sometimes call the 66-year-old Barghouti the "Nelson Mandela of Palestine." His portrait appears across the occupied West Bank and was visible in Gaza before much of the Strip was devastated by strikes during the war.
Background
A leading figure during the second intifada in the early 2000s, Barghouti was convicted in June 2004 by an Israeli court and sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of involvement in four attacks that killed five people in Israel and the occupied West Bank. He is widely discussed as a possible successor to longtime Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
Family, Health, And Allegations
Arab Barghouti, Marwan's son, was 11 when his father was jailed in 2002 and is now 35. Based in Ramallah, he has not seen his father for four years and has campaigned full-time for his release. Arab says he has had no direct contact with Marwan since the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel carried out by Hamas; updates come via Marwan's lawyer, who last visited on April 12 and reported that Marwan had been violently assaulted three times in recent weeks.
“We learned about ... his mistreatment and the abuse and torture,” Arab Barghouti told AFP. He added that his father had lost significant weight, estimating around 10 kilograms (22 pounds).
The Israel Prison Service has provided AFP with a statement calling the allegations "false, recycled, and entirely without foundation," saying it has no record of events as described.
Political Standing And Vision
Despite prolonged incarceration and reports of declining health, Arab says his father remains mentally sharp and focused. He describes Marwan Barghouti as a unifying figure who could appeal across Palestinian political factions, including Fatah and, potentially, elements within Hamas.
“We're in desperate need for unified leadership. And I think he represents that. He represents a future democratic renewal in Palestine, unity,” Arab said, adding that his father still advocates for Palestinian freedom, dignity and—publicly—the two-state solution. Arab quoted his father: “Hopelessness is a privilege that we don't have as Palestinians ... delete hopelessness from your dictionary.”
Outlook
There are no signs Barghouti will be released soon: Israel has refused to include him in prisoner exchanges since the Gaza war began, and Arab believes his father represents a political threat to the agenda of Israel's current government. Arab remains critical of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, saying it is weakened and limited in its ability to protect Palestinians in the West Bank, which he describes as facing a dangerous situation that could escalate into chaos.
Marwan Barghouti's long-term fate remains uncertain. His family continues to campaign for his release and to promote his vision for Palestinian unity and rights.
