The Overland Park Farmers Market says misleading AI search summaries sent over 100 visitors to a construction site on April 17. City officials compiled reports from social channels and in-person queries and shared screenshots of incorrect results from Meta AI and Google AI. The Overland Park Farmers Market in Kansas says incorrect AI-generated search summaries directed more than 100 visitors to a construction site on April 17 — the future permanent location of the market, but not yet open.
What Happened
The market posted screenshots on Instagram showing multiple misleading AI search results from Meta and Google that returned wrong addresses, outdated vendor lists and images that did not depict the market. According to Meg Ralph, Strategic Communications Director for the City of Overland Park, the city compiled reports from social media messages and on-site inquiries to determine that over 100 people were impacted.

Examples Of Incorrect Information
- Meta AI reportedly returned the wrong address for the market.
- Google AI produced inconsistent summaries — one showed an unrelated image, another listed the wrong address, while some Google results were accurate.
- Several search results pulled up outdated season and vendor information, creating confusion for visitors.
"AI isn't always the expert," the market wrote in its Instagram post. "Don't end up at a fence when you're looking for flowers!"
Why This Happened
The market is in a transition this spring: April and May events are being held at a local community center, and the market plans to move to its permanent home at Clock Tower Landing once construction is complete on June 6. During this period, AI tools can surface outdated or mixed sources and produce incorrect directions.
What Organizers Are Doing
- The city communications team reached out to Meta to request corrections to AI-generated listings.
- Market organizers urged visitors to verify dates, times and locations on the city's official website and the market's social channels.
