Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said on Monday that a man wounded in Saturday's shooting in Kyiv has died in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll from the attack to seven.
What Happened
Authorities say a Russian-born man opened fire on pedestrians with an automatic rifle in the Holosiivskyi district on Saturday, then barricaded himself inside a supermarket, where he held hostages. Police later shot and killed the attacker at the scene.
Police Conduct Under Scrutiny
After reviewing video from the scene, investigators issued "notices of suspicion" to two police officers. Kravchenko said the footage appears to show the officers running away rather than helping wounded civilians or attempting to stop the shooter.
"Instead, the patrol team, equipped with firearms and all the legal grounds to use them, in fact left the scene," Kravchenko wrote, adding that the officers' inaction allowed the attacker to continue down the street and fire at defenseless pedestrians.
Victims and Response
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said seven people, including a child, remained hospitalized after the attack, and four were in intensive care. Ukraine's security service has opened an investigation and is treating the episode as a possible terrorist act, though police have not publicly identified a motive.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the incident has raised questions about the public's right to self-defense and how the suspect obtained a firearms permit. The investigation is ongoing and authorities have issued procedural notices while probing both the attack and the circumstances that allowed it to unfold.
