Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), a congressman aligned with the MAGA movement, is facing scrutiny after Federal Election Commission filings — reported by The Daily Mail — show roughly $152,000 in campaign funds spent on limousine services, upscale restaurants, luxury hotel stays and private boat charters between 2022 and 2025.
Spending Details
The filings depict a campaign that did not shy away from high-end expenses. Notable entries include nearly $50,000 for repeated stays at the Sagamore Resort on Lake George, more than $7,000 for private boat charters at the same resort, nearly $5,000 across two visits to Nobu, and a $1,300 charge described as a "meeting" at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. The records also show nights at five-star properties such as the Ritz-Carlton and The Breakers in Palm Beach.

Other items in the filings include almost $11,000 for limousine services — including a $2,085 charge listed simply as "taxi" and a $1,390 entry labeled "taxi to event" — along with tens of thousands of dollars in restaurant bills at steakhouses and upscale venues.
Legal Context And Optics
Under federal rules, campaign funds can be used for expenses tied to political or fundraising activities so long as they are not strictly personal. That legal distinction, however, does not prevent critics and watchdogs from raising concerns about the optics of donors' money funding high-end travel and amenities.

"This sounds like a person who tends to treat himself royally off the dime of his donors," said Craig Holman, a campaign finance reform lobbyist. Campaign finance expert Michael Beckel added that such spending is likely to "raise a lot of eyebrows" among donors and constituents.
Critics say the pattern reinforces broader worries that campaign cash can underwrite a lifestyle far removed from the everyday voters footing the bill. Supporters or the campaign may argue these expenses were tied to fundraising, donor outreach or official events; nonetheless, watchdogs say campaigns should exercise caution to avoid the appearance of impropriety.
