Geneva — A regional PostBus erupted in flames Tuesday evening in Kerzers, a town about 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Bern, leaving at least six people dead and three others critically injured, Fribourg canton police said.

Police spokesperson Frédéric Papaux said investigators believe an unspecified "voluntary act" may have started the blaze that quickly engulfed the vehicle. Swiss media images from the scene showed flames consuming the bus as first responders arrived.

Rescue teams reported the vehicle was "totally engulfed in flames" when they reached the scene. Ambulance crews and helicopters transported three people with severe injuries to hospitals; two additional passengers received treatment at the site, authorities said.
Investigation Underway
Fribourg canton police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fire. Officials have not released further details about victims' identities or a motive, and inquiries remain ongoing as investigators work to establish the precise sequence of events.
"After rushing to the scene, rescue teams noted that the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames," the regional government said in a statement.
PostBus, the company that operates regional services on behalf of Switzerland's postal system, confirmed the vehicle was involved in the incident. Authorities continue to examine the scene and review available footage and witness accounts.
