A Baltimore couple has pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse after investigators say they deliberately starved two of their four children, resulting in the death of their 5-year-old daughter, Zona.
What Happened
On Oct. 14, 2024, emergency responders found 5-year-old Zona unresponsive at the family home. She was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m. local time. Authorities later determined she died of malnutrition; her weight at death was reported as 17.5 pounds.

Investigation Details
Detectives found evidence that food in the house was withheld from some children. Investigators described kitchen cupboards as completely bare, the freezer containing frozen meat, and the refrigerator holding only a single salad. Additional nonperishable items were discovered locked in the parents bedroom and a closet, out of reach of the children.
Interview records and investigative findings also indicated that one child had been seen searching through garbage at school for food. When questioned, neither parent could account for when they last fed Zona or took responsibility for her care.

Zona's body was described by investigators as severely emaciated and extremely malnourished, with little muscle tone. Three surviving siblings were evaluated at a hospital after police arrived. A 6-year-old brother weighed about 35 pounds and remained hospitalized for 12 days; he later recovered following treatment. Medical staff observed that the children ate quickly and with intense focus when given food.
Legal Proceedings
On Feb. 26, Bernice Byrd and Gerald Byrd pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first-degree child abuse for their roles in the treatment of Zona and the 6-year-old. The couple face a potential maximum penalty of life in prison; court filings indicate that sentencing could result in all but 70 years being suspended, effectively leaving 70 years of incarceration to serve. Sentencing is scheduled for June 10.

Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan J. Bates called the defendants behavior horrific and said no punishment could erase the fact that an innocent child died. Bates, speaking as a father, said the facts of the case were nauseating and expressed sorrow for Zona.
