Monzon-Alvarado told investigators she brought the infant to the hospital after the child stopped responding; she initially said the baby became unresponsive after being placed face-down in bed following a feeding.
Conflicting Accounts
According to reports, the mother said their two-year-old son often jumped on the bed and that the infant might have fallen. The father allegedly gave a markedly different explanation—telling police he believed a supernatural force or "Satan" had caused the injury.

Medical Findings
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy that found multiple skull fractures, bleeding in the frontal lobes and a subdural hematoma, along with other trauma. Doctors also noted suspicious bruising around the baby's eyes and jaw. Medical staff were unable to revive the infant.
Investigation And Charges
Investigators say the parents had observed bruises several days earlier and that the infant had vomited, but they did not seek medical care until the baby became unresponsive. An assistant state's attorney told the court that the pattern of injuries was inconsistent with a single fall from a bed. Prosecutors said they may upgrade the charges to homicide depending on the results of additional forensic testing.
Both Monzon-Alvarado and Pineda are charged with first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. Authorities say the counts carry a combined maximum sentence of up to 55 years in prison. Both suspects are being held without bail.
