A crypto-funded super PAC, Fairshake, is preparing seven-figure advertising campaigns against two Illinois Democratic state lawmakers running for Congress, intensifying a national fight over crypto regulation and outside political spending.
Fairshake plans to spend at least $1 million each against Illinois state Rep. La Shawn Ford, a candidate to replace retiring Rep. Danny Davis, and state Sen. Robert Peters, who is running for the open 2nd District seat as Rep. Robin Kelly pursues a U.S. Senate bid. The ad buys are among the PAC's first major moves this year and are drawn from what the group describes as a roughly $190 million war chest.
What The Spending Targets
Both Ford and Peters voted for state-level crypto legislation that became law last August and imposed new consumer-protection standards and compliance requirements on digital-asset firms. Peters was a co-sponsor of the measure and has received support from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a noted crypto skeptic.
Fairshake accused those lawmakers of backing 'draconian rules' that would produce a patchwork of state regulations, harm U.S. competitiveness and job creation, and ultimately undermine consumer protections.
Bigger Picture And Other Races
Fairshake has also announced plans to spend $1.5 million against Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), a vocal critic of the industry on the House Financial Services Committee. A Fairshake affiliate is backing Republican Rep. Barry Moore in his Alabama primary, signaling the group will intervene in both parties' contests when industry interests are at stake.
The Illinois contests are competitive. Ford has endorsement support from retiring Rep. Danny Davis and faces a field that includes Chicago Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, who has benefited from outside spending tied to an AIPAC-aligned super PAC. Peters is running for the 2nd District seat currently held by Kelly and faces former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who is the beneficiary of positive ads from an AI-industry–linked super PAC.
Industry Influence And Policy Stakes
Conyears-Ervin and Jackson have signaled support for industry-friendly crypto policies and hold A ratings from the industry-aligned advocacy group Stand With Crypto. The ad buys underscore a broader push by crypto firms to secure favorable federal rules: the industry is urging Congress to pass comprehensive legislation that would set national standards for trading and classification of digital assets, though negotiations in the Senate remain stalled amid disputes between crypto firms and banks.
Fairshake operates independently of campaigns and is funded primarily by the crypto companies Coinbase and Ripple and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The spending has prompted criticism from those who see it as an attempt by well-funded industry groups to influence primary outcomes and sideline officials who backed state-level consumer protections.
Ford did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Peters, speaking through a spokesperson, criticized outside super PACs for attempting to 'buy' the historically majority-Black 2nd District seat and said he would not be swayed by outside money.
