Analilia Mejia Wins NJ-11 Democratic Primary After Tom Malinowski Concedes — A Major Progressive Victory

Analilia Mejia has won the special Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District after former Rep. Tom Malinowski conceded, delivering a significant victory for national progressives and allies of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Malinowski formally conceded on Tuesday and praised Mejia’s campaign, saying he gave her “unequivocal credit for running a positive campaign and for inspiring so many voters on Election Day.” Mejia, who served as political director for Sen. Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, drew backing from prominent progressive leaders and activists nationwide.

The primary — held to fill the seat vacated by Mikie Sherrill — was widely viewed as an early test of competing Democratic strategies ahead of this year’s midterm elections and a bellwether for the party’s direction in competitive House contests.

“Like many Democrats in this moment, I am not only appalled at MAGA, at Trumpism, at Donald Trump’s administration — their overreach, their corruption, their blatant hypocrisy — but I’m also ticked off at my own Democratic leadership,”

Mejia’s closest challenger in the primary was Malinowski. Trailing the top two were former New Jersey Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way and Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, among more than a dozen Democratic contenders on the ballot.

Mejia will face Republican Randolph Township councilman Joe Hathaway — who ran unopposed for the GOP nomination — in the general election on April 16. She enters the general election as the favorite in a district that favored the Democratic ticket by roughly nine percentage points in 2024.

What’s next: Mejia will now pivot to the general election campaign, where national progressive groups and the broader Democratic coalition will watch closely to see whether her primary success can translate into a November victory that helps shape control of the U.S. House.
