Viral Video Shows Water Pouring Through Howard University's Bethune Annex Cafe Ceiling After Pipe Burst

A video that circulated widely across social media this week captured water pouring from the ceiling of Howard University's Bethune Annex Cafe, producing dramatic footage that alarmed students, alumni and others online.
What Happened
The clip appears to show dark-colored water cascading onto tables and chairs in the otherwise empty dining space. Howard University later confirmed the incident was caused by a burst pipe inside the building. The university says the pipe failed at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, producing enough water damage to require the facility to close.
University Response
“The water leak was quickly contained, and there was no reported harm to students or employees,” the Office of University Communications said in a statement. The university added that staff secured the affected area and are assessing damages while arranging necessary repairs.
The Bethune Annex Cafe is attached to a student dormitory; university officials emphasized that the impacted portion of the building was secured and that there were no reported injuries. While the visuals in the clip looked alarming, campus leaders said the situation was handled promptly and controlled.
Impact on Campus Dining
The university confirmed dining services remain available across campus. Students currently have eight alternative dining options, including the main cafeteria in the Blackburn Center, while the Bethune Annex Cafe remains closed until repairs are completed and inspections are finished.
Howard University did not specify what caused the pipe to burst and said it will provide updates as inspections and repairs proceed.
