U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an arrest detainer on Friday for Mena Mohsen Farez Nmn Awad, 31, an Egyptian national accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in her Nashville apartment on New Year’s Eve.

According to local reports and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the teen was asleep in her bed next to her young nephew when Awad allegedly forced entry into the apartment, climbed into the bed and assaulted her. The victim reportedly found Awad with a handgun tucked into his waistband. She later freed herself, gathered her nephew and told the suspect she would not report the incident if he left the residence.

DHS officials said Awad entered the United States in 2017 through the Diversity Visa (lottery) program and has a documented history of violent-related charges since his arrival, including prior allegations of domestic violence, intimidation, possession of a weapon, violation of a court order and vehicle theft.

"Horrendous immigration policies allowed this monster into our country and made victims of children and families," Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. "This child rapist was allowed into our country by the Diversity Lottery program. Secretary Noem paused the diversity lottery to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program."
McLaughlin added that ICE's arrest detainer is intended to keep the suspect detained so he is not released while criminal and immigration proceedings move forward.
Authorities say the victim called her sister after the suspect left and the sister then contacted law enforcement. Police apprehended Awad in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 16; he was subsequently extradited to Tennessee the following week.
Prosecutors in Tennessee have charged Awad with aggravated rape with a weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated burglary, DHS said. The investigation and legal process are ongoing.
