California man arrested after fortified underground bunker found with weapons cache

The California Highway Patrol arrested 40-year-old Michael Kamfolt after finding a fortified underground bunker at a suspected illegal cannabis grow in Anderson. Officers say the bunker was accessed via a 100-foot culvert and had power, ventilation and cultivation supplies. Seized evidence included 13 firearms, about 10,000 rounds (including armor-piercing), 30 high-capacity magazines and four body armor vests. The search followed a December 2025 tip and a Jan. 20 search warrant.

A California Highway Patrol investigation into a suspected illegal marijuana grow in Anderson led to the arrest of 40-year-old Michael Kamfolt after officers discovered a fortified underground bunker containing what authorities described as an "alarming cache of illegal firearms and ammunition." Kamfolt now faces nearly a dozen weapons-related charges, including possession of an assault rifle and manufacturing a ghost gun.

CHP said officers executed a search warrant on Jan. 20 after receiving a tip about the property in December 2025. During the search, they located an underground bunker reachable through a roughly 100-foot-long culvert.

The California Highway Patrol said a massive weapons cache was found inside the bunker, shown at left.

The agency described the bunker as having power and ventilation, a concrete floor with built-in drainage, and the supplies necessary to cultivate marijuana. In addition to the grow-related equipment, officers seized a large collection of weapons and protective gear:

A 100-foot tunnel led to the bunker in Anderson, the California Highway Patrol said.
  • 13 firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun and three AR-15–style rifles (one with an obliterated serial number)
  • Approximately 10,000 rounds of ammunition, including armor-piercing rounds
  • 30 high-capacity magazines
  • Four soft body armor vests
  • Two firearms reported stolen in 2016 and 1978

"This operation went far beyond an illegal grow. The combination of a hidden bunker and an alarming cache of illegal firearms and ammunition highlights the threat posed to public safety," said CHP Northern Division Chief John Pinoli.

Authorities say the discovery underscores concerns about criminal operations that combine illicit cultivation with weapons storage. The CHP’s announcement also drew reactions on social media, with some commenters describing the site as a "dream prep setup" or suggesting the suspect was "preparing for the apocalypse."

Kamfolt remains in custody as the investigation and evidence processing continue. Additional charges or details may be announced as the case progresses.
