Newsom’s official X account posted an AI search result for “sundowning”, implying that President Trump’s overnight posting spree resembled a dementia-related symptom. The post followed hours of Truth Social activity in which Trump attacked Newsom and others and repeated claims about Walmart and alleged ties between Newsom and drug cartels. Newsom’s account pushed back with a corrective, noting that California’s 303 Walmart stores remain open and mocking the cartel allegation. The exchange highlights the growing tendency for political disputes to play out as provocative bursts on social platforms.
Newsom Team Suggests Trump’s Overnight Posts Resembled ‘Sundowning’ — Sparks Social Media Firestorm

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s official X account, GovPressOffice, drew attention after posting an AI search result for the dementia-related term “sundowning”, suggesting that President Donald Trump’s late-night flurry of posts resembled the symptom.
The GovPressOffice X account posted “So…about last night,” on Thursday morning alongside an AI result describing sundowning as nighttime “confusion, agitation, and anxiety.” The post followed hours in which Trump spent much of Wednesday night into Thursday morning posting on Truth Social.
During that period, Trump attacked Newsom and former President Barack Obama and criticized coverage surrounding the death of VA nurse Alex Pretti, who was reported to have been shot and killed in Minneapolis in an encounter involving Border Patrol agents over the weekend.
Trump also claimed that Walmart planned to close hundreds of California stores because of the state’s minimum wage policy, and he amplified an allegation tying Newsom to a money-laundering scheme linked to Mexican drug cartels.
Just to clarify: — Walmart’s 303 stores in California are open. — The AI robot is lying. Governor Newsom is not Pablo Escobar.
Newsom’s account used a sardonic corrective tone to dispute the factual claims and to mock the overnight posting. The exchange underscores how political disputes increasingly unfold in rapid, provocative bursts on social platforms — mixing policy claims, personal attacks and, in this case, health-related insinuations.
Note: Sundowning is a recognized symptom experienced by some people with dementia; invoking medical conditions in political exchanges can be sensitive and controversial.
