Malaysia has reopened access to Grok after X implemented additional safety controls, the communications regulator said on Jan. 23. The temporary block earlier this month followed global criticism of a Grok feature that allowed users to generate and publish sexualised images of others. The service was reinstated once X put in place new safeguards to limit harmful outputs.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Malaysia has restored access to Grok, the AI chatbot on social platform X, after X introduced additional safety measures, the country's communications regulator said on Friday.

Earlier this month, Malaysia temporarily blocked access to Grok following international criticism of a feature that allowed users to generate and publish sexualised images of other people. The move came amid wider global concern about misuse of AI image-generation tools and the potential for harm.

The communications regulator said the service was reinstated after X implemented the new safeguards. X has not publicly detailed all the changes, but the company said it was taking steps to reduce harmful outputs and better moderate user-generated content.

Reuters reported the restoration with reporting by Rozanna Latiff and editing by Martin Petty.

Context: The incident highlights growing scrutiny of AI-driven content features and government responses when platforms are perceived to enable misuse.
