NYC Housing Director Cea Weaver Says She 'Regrets Some' Past Remarks After Old Posts Resurface
Zohran Mamdani speaks during an interview on "The Story with Martha MacCallum" at Fox News on Oct. 15, 2025, in New York City.

Cea Weaver, appointed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani to lead the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, said she regretted “some” of her past rhetoric after old posts from a now-deleted X account resurfaced. In a Spectrum News NY1 interview, Weaver declined to name which remarks she regrets but highlighted her decades of work on affordable housing and tenants’ rights. Former Mayor Eric Adams publicly pushed back, defending homeownership as a pathway to stability and generational wealth.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s newly appointed director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, Cea Weaver, acknowledged she regretted “some” of her earlier rhetoric after critics resurfaced posts from a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) account and a disputed video appearance.

Weaver, a longtime housing activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), addressed the controversy in an interview on Spectrum News NY1. Host Errol Louis referenced a resurfaced tweet in which Weaver called homeownership a tool of “White supremacy” and quoted former Mayor Eric Adams, who said Weaver was “out of your f---ing mind.” Louis asked Weaver to respond.

“I don’t think I’m out of my mind,” Weaver said. “Some of those things are certainly not how I would say things today, and are regretful.”

Weaver did not identify which specific comments she now regrets. She stressed that her decades of experience fighting for affordable housing and tenants’ rights inform her work, and said combating systemic and racial inequalities in housing—whether people rent or own—will be central to her agenda.

In the interview, a screenshot of a now-deleted post was shown that read: “Private property including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of White supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy.” Former Mayor Adams responded on social media, defending homeownership as a path to stability and generational wealth for immigrants and people of color, and calling Weaver’s wording detached from reality.

Weaver emphasized practical priorities for her tenure: expanding access to affordable housing, strengthening tenants’ rights, and ensuring safe, affordable homes for New Yorkers. The exchange highlights the political scrutiny facing Mayor Mamdani’s early appointments as their past statements are examined in public debate.
