Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has flown back to the United Kingdom after a car crash in southwest Nigeria that killed two of his close associates.
Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele died after the Lexus SUV they were travelling in with Joshua struck a stationary truck on a road near Lagos on Monday. Joshua sustained only minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after being deemed clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
Incident And Investigation
Nigerian police have charged the vehicle's driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, with "dangerous driving causing death." Kayode is due to appear in court on January 20. Authorities say the Lexus was travelling on the busy Lagos–Ibadan highway when it rammed into the stationary truck.
Those Affected
Ghami served as Joshua's strength and conditioning coach and Ayodele worked as a trainer. The pair were close to the boxer; just hours before the collision Joshua and Ayodele posted clips on social media of themselves playing table tennis. British media reported Joshua returned to the UK on Saturday, ahead of the funerals for Ghami and Ayodele.
The 2012 Olympic champion, who has family roots in Nigeria, had been on holiday in the country following his win over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.
Note: Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Further details may emerge after the driver's court appearance.
