The LAPD says officers shot and killed an adult son after finding him actively stabbing his father at a Valerio Street home in the West Valley on Dec. 3. Responding officers located the subject on top of his father in a bedroom; he ignored commands and the encounter resulted in an officer-involved shooting. Both the son and the father were pronounced dead at the scene, and police recovered a knife and a pair of scissors as evidence. The Robbery Homicide Division and the Force Investigation Division are conducting separate investigations.

Adult Son Fatally Shot by LAPD After Allegedly Stabbing Father in West Valley Home

The Los Angeles Police Department said officers shot and killed an adult man who was actively stabbing his father inside a residence on Valerio Street in the West Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

West Valley Patrol Division officers responded shortly before 8:10 a.m. after a caller reported a "male with mental illness" acting erratically toward his father. According to the LAPD, dispatch notes indicated the subject had been diagnosed with a mental illness.

Officers first spoke with the subject's brother, who said he had come to the home after their mother called, fearing for the father's safety. The brother told investigators the son had a history of violence toward family members, including a stabbing of his father eight years earlier and an assault on their mother, and that the man had previously been confined to a mental health facility.

After requesting additional units, officers entered the residence and found the subject lying on top of his father in a bedroom while holding what appeared to be a knife. The LAPD says the man did not comply with officers' commands and continued stabbing his father; at that point an officer-involved shooting occurred. The subject was struck by gunfire and detained at the scene.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced both the subject and the father deceased at the scene. A kitchen knife and a pair of scissors were recovered and logged as evidence. No officers or other members of the public were reported injured.

Investigations: The LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division is overseeing the homicide investigation while the Force Investigation Division examines the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. The department has not released the identities of the men involved and told PEOPLE no additional details are available at this time.
