The incident began as a dispute between a sedan and an SUV and escalated after both vehicles pulled into the lot at about 2:45 p.m., Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said. According to investigators, the argument continued in the parking area and turned into a physical confrontation before gunfire broke out.

Victims and condition: The SUV carried a man, a woman and two children. Police say multiple rounds struck all four occupants of the SUV. The male passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and both children were transported to a hospital and remain in critical condition.

Suspect and custody: The suspect, a man who was alone in the sedan, remained at the scene when officers arrived. He was treated at a hospital for injuries and later taken into custody.
