Decomposed Body, Explosives Discovered Following Hourslong Stamford Standoff

Law enforcement officers in Stamford, Connecticut, discovered a decomposed body and multiple explosive devices inside a home after an hourslong standoff in which a resident fired on officers, police said.

Standoff and Exchange of Gunfire

Officers from the Stamford Police Department responded Tuesday morning to a residence on Oaklawn Avenue after a state marshal called 911 while attempting to carry out a court-ordered eviction. Police identified the armed resident as 63-year-old Jed Parkington.

Authorities said Parkington fired at officers several times during the confrontation, damaging police vehicles and prompting officers to return fire. No officers were injured. Later in the day, Parkington was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

"This was an extremely dangerous incident that tragically resulted in the loss of two lives," Stamford Police Chief Timothy Shaw said, praising the coordinated response by local, state and federal partners.

Discoveries in the Home

While clearing the residence after the standoff, detectives located a decomposed body on the second floor. Investigators also found a cache of explosive devices, including pipe bombs, grenades and Molotov cocktails. Stamford's bomb squad was called in to render the devices safe before investigators conducted a thorough search of the property.

Investigations and Background

Authorities said the identity and cause of death of the decomposed person remain under investigation. The state inspector general's office has opened an inquiry into officers' use of deadly force during the incident.

Court records reviewed by investigators show the property had been foreclosed on in April after mortgage payments were not made, and a judge issued a formal eviction order last month after giving the residents an opportunity to bring the mortgage current.

Authorities Continue to Investigate: Local, state and federal agencies, including hostage negotiators and bomb technicians, assisted in the response. The investigation is ongoing and officials have not released further details about the deceased person found inside the home.
