“My Kid Is Dead”: Bodycam Captures Father’s Agony After 11-Year-Old Stepson Killed in Nevada Road-Rage Shooting

Body-worn camera footage released by Las Vegas-area authorities captures a father’s raw anguish after his 11-year-old stepson, Brandon Dominguez, was fatally shot during a road-rage confrontation on a Henderson highway on Nov. 14.

Footage and immediate aftermath

The video shows the grieving stepfather, identified by police as Valente Ayala, moments after the boy was struck while the family drove to school. In visible distress, Ayala yells, “My kid is dead. My son!” Officers are seen taking the suspect, Tyler Matthew Johns, into custody at the scene.

Suspect’s statement and arrest

In the footage, the man identified as the shooter appears to admit responsibility, telling officers that the confrontation turned violent. On camera he says:

“We were road-raging. It’s 100 percent my fault. I shot at him, dude. I didn't even know he had a kid in the car.”

What investigators say happened

According to police, the incident began at about 7:30 a.m. when two vehicles became involved in a verbal dispute after one driver attempted to pass the other using the shoulder. Investigators say the suspect fired a single handgun round into the other vehicle; the bullet struck Brandon, who had been seated in the back seat.

Police say the boy’s stepfather then rammed the suspect’s car into the other vehicle. Both vehicles stopped in the middle of the freeway and the drivers exited and continued a heated exchange. A witness flagged down responding officers, who arrested the suspect at the scene.

Authorities booked Tyler Matthew Johns into the Henderson Detention Center; court records list one count of open murder with a deadly-weapon enhancement and two weapons-related charges. Bond was set at $20,000. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders and medical staff at a nearby hospital, the child died from his injuries.

Family response and community appeal

The family has launched a GoFundMe to support Brandon’s mother, Rubi Chavarria. The fundraiser describes Brandon as “the light of our family — our happy, loving boy with the biggest heart, the silliest personality.”

Henderson authorities called the shooting a “senseless act” and urged drivers to exercise patience and restraint on the road, especially during busy holiday periods when dangerous driving behaviors tend to increase.
