Armed Fugitive Hails Uber During Hospital Escape in Georgia

Timothy Shane, 52, escaped custody after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation following an apparent suicide attempt. Authorities say he stole at least two vehicles, a Glock handgun was reported missing, and he reportedly used an Uber during his flight. Deputies described him as about 5-foot-9 and warned he should be considered armed and dangerous. One stolen vehicle was recovered at a Publix on Highway 155 in Henry County; investigators continue to search for Shane.

A man described by authorities as "armed and dangerous" reportedly used an Uber as part of a brazen escape from custody in Georgia, Rockdale County officials said.

Timothy Shane, 52, was taken from a Rockdale County detention facility to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta late Sunday for a medical evaluation after an apparent suicide attempt. Authorities say Shane slipped free of custody and escaped the hospital at about 1:20 a.m. on Monday.

Sequence of events

According to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Shane first fled the hospital on foot. He then allegedly stole an SUV parked nearby, crashed it, and continued running on foot. The SUV’s owner later reported that a Glock handgun was missing from the vehicle.

Investigators say Shane requested an Uber to pick him up at a residence in south Rockdale, but deputies arrived after he had already left. Officials have not released details about how he managed to hail the ride while fleeing.

Authorities also say Shane stole a Pontiac Grand Prix during his flight; that vehicle was recovered Monday night at a Publix supermarket on Highway 155 in Henry County. It remains unclear whether Shane stole additional vehicles or remains in that area.

Description and warning

Shane is described as about 5-foot-9 with a buzzed haircut. Deputies warned he may be wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and dark blue pants. Given his history of fleeing and pending felony drug and weapons charges, the sheriff’s office said Shane should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about Shane’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office. Do not approach him and report tips to local law enforcement immediately.
