Inmate Escapes Hospital After Suicide Attempt; Statewide Manhunt Underway

Georgia authorities have launched a statewide search for 52-year-old Timothy Shane after he fled custody while at Grady Memorial Hospital for an apparent suicide attempt. Shane, arrested Nov. 24 after a traffic stop that yielded methamphetamine and a weapon, allegedly stole an SUV outside the hospital, crashed it and ran from the scene — possibly with the vehicle owner’s handgun. Authorities in Georgia have launched a statewide manhunt after an inmate taken to a hospital following an apparent suicide attempt escaped custody, stole a vehicle and remains at large.

Fifty-two-year-old Timothy Shane was booked into the Rockdale County Jail on Nov. 24 after a traffic stop for reckless driving. Deputies say a search of his vehicle discovered methamphetamine and a weapon. Jail records list multiple charges related to that stop, including possession of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission or attempted commission of certain felonies, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Records also show an earlier allegation of felony fleeing and attempting to elude police connected to the Nov. 24 incident.

According to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), Shane was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta at about 8 p.m. on Nov. 30 for evaluation after an apparent suicide attempt. Investigators say he fled the hospital just after 1 a.m. on Dec. 1 and took an SUV parked outside the facility.

Deputies released an image that appears to show Shane running barefoot in a hospital gown. The stolen SUV was later involved in a crash; after the collision, Shane is believed to have exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies say the vehicle’s owner reported a handgun missing and that Shane should be considered armed and dangerous.

"Inmate Shane has a history of fleeing along with felony drug and weapon charges. He should be considered armed and dangerous," the RCSO said in a statement.

Shane is described in jail records as a White male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and 52 years old. Law enforcement agencies are searching Rockdale County and neighboring counties.
