Kiley Backs Bipartisan Two-Year Extension of ACA Subsidies to Avert Premium Shock

Rep. Kevin Kiley is leading a bipartisan push to extend ACA premium subsidies for two years to prevent sudden rate hikes that could hit an estimated 22 million people. He called the plan a compromise meant to attract lawmakers from both parties and urged that any extension include cost-control measures to stay fiscally responsible. The proposal is intended to provide short-term stability while Congress negotiates longer-term reforms.

Rep. Kevin Kiley pushes bipartisan two-year extension of ACA subsidies

Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) said on The Weekend: Primetime that he is leading a bipartisan effort to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies for two years in order to prevent abrupt increases in health insurance costs for millions of Americans.

"I don't think it's a good thing for 22 million Americans to suddenly have to pay double or more for their health insurance," Kiley said, warning of a potential "huge cost shock."

Kiley described the proposal as a practical compromise intended to draw support from both Democrats and Republicans. He stressed that any short-term extension should be paired with targeted cost-control reforms so the measure remains fiscally responsible.

The subsidies — which reduce monthly premiums for many people who purchase coverage through ACA marketplaces — could lead to significant premium increases for enrollees if left to expire without congressional action. Kiley's two-year approach aims to provide lawmakers breathing room to negotiate more durable reforms while protecting consumers from immediate price spikes.

Supporters say the temporary extension would deliver stability to families and insurers; critics may argue for faster or deeper structural changes to rein in health-care costs. Kiley emphasized balancing consumer protection with fiscal discipline as talks continue.
