Search continues for missing passenger after cruise ship incident

Search-and-rescue teams are actively looking for a 76-year-old British man who fell from a cruise ship into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, Nov. 27. The passenger was reported to have gone overboard from the TUI Marella Explorer 2 while the vessel was en route to La Gomera.

Authorities say the incident occurred about 16 nautical miles from Punta de Teno, off the coast of Tenerife. The passenger has not been seen since entering the water and the circumstances that led to the incident remain unclear.

Immediate response: The ship's captain stopped the vessel and activated the standard "man overboard" procedures. That response included reviewing onboard camera footage, conducting circular search patterns, deploying marker rafts and coordinating with maritime authorities.

Spanish search efforts resumed at first light the following morning and continue to cover the area. The operation involves specialized vessels and an emergency helicopter to expand the search perimeter.

“It has been confirmed he went overboard and is aged 76. The search for him started yesterday and is continuing today. The search was relaunched at first light this morning,” a coastguard spokesperson said.

In a statement, TUI Group said it was "deeply saddened" by the incident and confirmed that a guest had been seen entering the water while the ship was on passage. The company said it is supporting the passenger’s family with a dedicated care team and is cooperating with local authorities.

Investigations into how the passenger entered the water are ongoing. Officials have not released further details and the search operation remains active.
