Angelo State Secures $165,000 Welch Foundation Grant to Expand Chemistry Research and Student Opportunities

Angelo State University's Chemistry and Biochemistry Department received a three-year, $165,000 grant from the Welch Foundation, paid as $55,000 per year. The funding will expand undergraduate research, provide scholarships, support faculty projects, and help recruit students while leveraging additional funding. The award is the largest single Welch grant the department has received, bringing ASU's total Welch support to $849,000 over 20 years.

Angelo State University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has been awarded a three-year, $165,000 grant from the Houston-based Welch Foundation to strengthen faculty research and expand hands-on opportunities for undergraduate students in the chemical sciences.

Under the Welch Foundation’s Departmental Research Grant Program, ASU will receive $55,000 per year for three years. The department plans to direct the funds toward several priorities: increasing undergraduate research experiences, funding Welch Scholarships, advancing faculty research projects, recruiting highly motivated students, and leveraging the award to attract additional research and equipment funding.

ASU encourages students across STEM majors to participate in faculty-mentored chemistry and biochemistry research to enhance their resumes and strengthen applications for graduate or professional programs. The department also supports student travel to regional and national meetings so students can present their work, gain exposure to peers and professionals, and explore graduate opportunities.

“We also actively encourage and support student travel to regional and/or national meetings so they can present their research results,” said Dr. Kyle Beran, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “We recently had two students present their research at a regional conference of the American Chemical Society in Orlando, Florida. These conferences are a nice reward for students who were successful or spent an extended period of time on a research project. They are also an excellent opportunity for students to view research being conducted by their peers, to network with potential graduate programs, and to interact with chemistry and biochemistry professionals.”

The department noted that it has maintained a long-standing partnership with the Welch Foundation, which has previously supported research equipment, materials and supplies, and student scholarships and stipends. This $165,000 award is the largest single departmental grant ASU has received from the Welch Foundation; it brings the department’s cumulative Welch funding to $849,000 over the past 20 years.
