Former Missouri Substitute Sentenced to 10 Years for Trading Money, Drugs and Alcohol for Sex with Students

Carissa Jane Smith, 31, a former Dixon substitute and paraprofessional, was sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of sexual contact with a student. Authorities say she traded money, marijuana and alcohol for sexual encounters with students, meeting victims at her home and in isolated locations. Victims reported being told to stay silent; one said Smith’s husband threatened them. The sentence is six years for child endangerment and two years for each sexual contact count.

Carissa Jane Smith, 31, of Dixon, Missouri, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that she exchanged money, marijuana and alcohol for sexual contact with students.

Charges and plea

Smith was originally arrested on 19 counts, including statutory rape and sexual contact with a student. In September she pleaded guilty to reduced charges: one count of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of sexual contact with a student.

Allegations and investigation

Authorities say Smith, who worked in the Dixon School District as a paraprofessional and long-term substitute, offered students money, marijuana and alcohol in exchange for sexual activity or to allow her to perform oral sex. Investigators allege she arranged meetings at isolated locations, at her home and along remote roads.

Victims reported they were told to remain silent about the encounters or face consequences.

One victim said Smith asked him to have sex when he was in middle school. Another reported that, after students attempted to confront Smith about a video showing her smoking with students, her husband threatened them with a baseball bat.

Sentence

The 10-year sentence includes six years for the endangering-the-welfare charge and two years for each of the sexual contact counts. Smith resigned from the Dixon School District in August 2024.

This case underscores the seriousness of abuse of trust by school staff and the importance of reporting concerns about student safety.
