HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 5-year-old girl, identified as Zah-Layah Walter, was fatally shot in a suspected road-rage incident late Saturday, and a 47-year-old man, Jeremy Porter, was arrested Sunday on a capital murder charge, authorities said.
What Happened
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the family was driving home around 11:30 p.m. from the mother’s family residence when someone began firing into their vehicle near the intersection of Grant Road and Jones Road. Monica Hicks, Zah-Layah’s mother, told KHOU that her car was struck at least five times before she realized what had occurred.
"All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car," Hicks said.
Hicks said she did not realize Zah-Layah had been hit until she pulled into her apartment complex. The child was flown to a hospital and later pronounced dead. "She was the light of my life. That was my baby," Hicks told KHOU.
Other Victims and Investigation
Two other children in the vehicle sustained injuries from shattered glass; the sheriff’s office confirmed those wounds were non-life-threatening. Hicks said she did not see who was driving the vehicle that fired the shots.
In a statement issued Monday, Sept. 21, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said detectives used automated license plate reader (ALPR) data to locate and arrest Jeremy Porter. Porter remained in custody at the Harris County Jail as the investigation continued. Authorities have not released a suspected motive or said whether Porter knew the family.
Next Steps
The case is active and investigators are pursuing leads and collecting additional evidence. Legal proceedings for the suspect are pending in Harris County.
