Costco recalls nearly one million bottles of Kirkland Prosecco after reports of shattering

Costco and distributor Ethica Wines have announced a large recall of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG after reports that some bottles unexpectedly cracked or shattered, creating a safety hazard for consumers.

What happened

On November 6, 2026, F&F Fine Wines International, Inc., doing business as Ethica Wines, announced a recall covering an estimated 941,400 bottles. The company received 10 reports of bottles breaking or shattering, and one incident resulted in a laceration injury.

Why bottles can explode

Sparkling wines contain carbon dioxide produced during fermentation. If fermentation is not complete before bottling or if fermentation restarts inside a sealed bottle, excess pressure can build up. Under "extreme pressure," glass bottles can crack or shatter — a risk highlighted by Wine Spectator and referenced by the recall notice.

Which bottles are affected

  • Product: Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG
  • Packaging: Green glass bottle with purple foil and a purple label
  • UPC: 196633883742
  • Costco Item Number: 1879870
  • Where sold: Costco warehouses in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
  • When sold: April 2025 through August 2025 (approximate price: $8 per bottle)

What you should do

Do not attempt to open any recalled bottle. To reduce injury risk, discard affected bottles immediately in an outdoor trash bin rather than in an enclosed space. You do not need to return the bottle to Costco to get a refund; bring proof of purchase to your local Costco warehouse for reimbursement.

If you have questions about the recall or need further instructions, contact Ethica Wines at 786-810-7132, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, or email customercare@ethicawines.com.

This recall affects a large quantity of product sold at a major retailer and underscores the importance of careful fermentation and bottling controls for sparkling wines.
