Farm Rio Teams Up With Veritree To GPS-Track 1 Million-Tree Reforestation Pledge
Farm Rio Taps Veritree to GPS Track Its 1 Million Tree Pledge

Farm Rio has pledged to plant more than one million trees across Maranhão, Brazil, over the next three years, with restoration efforts independently tracked and verified by Veritree. Veritree will monitor plantings using GPS coordinates, field data, species records and ongoing ecosystem assessments to provide transparent, measurable metrics. The initiative builds on Farm Rio’s earlier "1,000 trees a day" program, which began in 2020 and reached two million trees five years later. Experts say restoring Maranhão can boost biodiversity and support local communities but requires consistent monitoring and reliable data.

B Corp fashion label Farm Rio has pledged to plant more than one million trees across Maranhão in northern Brazil over the next three years. The nature-restoration technology platform Veritree will independently verify and GPS-track the project, providing field data, species records and ongoing ecosystem monitoring to ensure transparency and measurable impact.

Why It Matters

"Nature is at the heart of everything we do, which is why it is one of our strategic pillars," said Andrezza Cruz, Farm Rio's head of sustainability. "Planting trees has never been about reaching a number—it's about giving back to the country that inspires us every day. As we continue to grow this commitment, we wanted a partner who could help us better understand and demonstrate the impact we're creating."

Veritree said the partnership builds on Farm Rio's existing restoration work and will track plantings using GPS coordinates, field observations, species-level records and long-term ecosystem monitoring. These data streams will offer Farm Rio and its customers verified metrics on survival rates, species diversity and ecological outcomes.

Brand Background and Past Commitments

Founded in 1997, Farm Rio has grown into one of Brazil’s most beloved fashion and lifestyle brands with more than 135 stores nationwide. It is the flagship label of Azzas 2154, one of Latin America's largest fashion retail groups. The Veritree agreement follows Farm Rio’s earlier program, "1,000 trees a day, every day," which began in 2020 and reached its two-millionth planted tree five years later.

Ecological Context

Maranhão is partially covered by the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest tropical forest, which spans multiple countries including Brazil. The World Wildlife Fund estimates roughly 17% of the Amazon has been deforested and about one-third of what remains is degraded, including damage from extreme drought. Restoring forests in Maranhão can strengthen biodiversity, support local communities and help protect a critical ecosystem.

"Delivering those outcomes requires consistent monitoring, reliable data and transparency as these projects grow over time," said Veritree co-founder and CEO Derrick Emsley. "Farm Rio has already demonstrated a long-term commitment to restoration, and this next chapter brings greater visibility into how trees are growing and the impact they're creating for the local community and broader ecosystem."

What To Watch: The partnership’s success will hinge on verified survival rates, species diversity in plantings, and benefits delivered to local communities. Regular public reporting of GPS-verified planting and monitoring data will be key to demonstrating the environmental and social returns of the pledge.
