The German army will form an independent regiment focused on unmanned systems, aiming for full operational capability by 2029. The unit will consist of five to six companies — including close‑range strike, long‑range (>500 km) weapons, electronic warfare, drone defence and an in‑house test & trials company. Initial operational capability is expected in 2027 with about 350 personnel, expanding to roughly 600.

The German armed forces will establish a dedicated regiment for unmanned systems that is scheduled to reach full operational capability by 2029, Army Chief Lieutenant General Christian Freuding told dpa in Berlin.

Structure and Roles

Freuding said the regiment will comprise five or six companies, each with distinct missions and capabilities. Planned elements include a close-range engagement company, a long-range weapons company (planned to operate at ranges beyond 500 kilometres depending on available systems), an electronic-warfare unit and a drone-defence company.

"And then I want us to have our own test and trials company within the regiment's structures, so that we can handle further development, testing, trials and operations from a single source," Freuding said.

He added that unmanned systems can either be deeply integrated into existing force structures or organised as an independent formation. "I am convinced that both approaches are promising. And that is why we have decided to also pursue the path of an independent regiment," he said.

Timeline and Personnel

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced the new unit on Thursday. The regiment is expected to reach initial operational capability in 2027 with roughly 350 personnel and then expand to about 600 soldiers as it scales up its capabilities and roles.

This dedicated formation reflects Germany's push to modernise its land forces with a focus on unmanned and electronic systems, consolidating development, testing and operational use within a single command to accelerate deployment and innovation.
