When a bird lunges at a butterfly in flight, bold markings on the insect's wings can combine with wing motion to produce optical illusions that mislead attackers about the butterfly's speed and direction. By the time the predator resolves the visual trick, the butterfly often has already escaped.
How Patterns and Motion Work Together
Researchers led by Professor Jolyon Troscianko at the University of Exeter report in Nature that contrasting wing patterns can interact with the complex kinematics of wingbeats to create misleading motion cues. Butterfly wings do more than flap: they clap together, fling apart and pivot in a figure‑of‑eight. Those movements can make stripes on the forewings appear to move differently on the downstroke and upstroke, producing asymmetric motion signals.
"The patterns on butterfly wings combine with their wingbeats to create optical illusions, making it look like the butterfly is moving in a different direction to its actual course," said Jolyon Troscianko. "This is likely enough to save a butterfly from the split‑second moment when a bird would try to catch it."
Methods and Experiments
The team combined high‑speed video of live butterflies, computer modelling and simulated evolution to predict which patterns produce the strongest motion confusion. They then tested those predictions in human behavioural trials: 100 volunteers completed 3,000 touchscreen 'butterfly‑catching' attempts, tapping the screen to intercept videoed butterflies. Butterflies modelled to generate stronger visual confusion caused participants to aim consistently further behind the target.
Because the core neural circuits for motion vision are similar across many vertebrates, the authors suggest the effect likely translates to bird predators. The researchers noted that predation experiments with live birds and butterflies would have been ethically and practically difficult, so the touchscreen approach offered a controlled proxy for testing human responses to motion confusion.
Scope, Limits and Biological Context
Not all butterflies use this strategy. The study found that the least motion‑confusing species tend to be brown or red, suggesting those species rely on camouflage or aposematic (warning) colours to deter predators. The team also cautioned that faster‑vision predators, such as dragonflies and robber flies, have much quicker visual processing and may be less susceptible to these illusions.
Broader Applications
Beyond biology, the authors point to practical uses for their motion‑vision tools: improving movement displays in flight and combat simulators, designing protective patterning for personnel, vehicles, drones or robots in motion, and even reducing harmful visual effects in built environments to improve road safety and human comfort.
