Peter Thiel told the "MD Meets" podcast that he doubts any Republican, including his preferred candidate Vice President JD Vance, will have an easy path to the White House in 2028. He described the Vance vs. Rubio framing as "the wrong question" and said his bigger worry is the Democratic Party's direction—he even put even odds on a democratic socialist nominee. Thiel's long ties to Vance include work at Mithril Capital and major donations, while he has also expanded international interests such as a reported $12 million Buenos Aires property purchase.

Peter Thiel, PayPal cofounder and prominent Republican donor, said on the "MD Meets" podcast that he doubts any GOP nominee — including his longtime preferred candidate, Vice President JD Vance — will have an easy path to the White House in 2028.

Vance Versus Rubio? The Wrong Focus, Thiel Says

Thiel described himself as a "Vance partisan" but argued that framing the 2028 contest as a straight choice between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio misses larger obstacles facing Republicans. "I worry that it will be very hard for either candidate to win," he said, suggesting the GOP faces structural and political headwinds beyond intraparty rivalry.

Concerns About the Democratic Direction

Thiel said his greater concern is the trajectory of the Democratic Party. He placed roughly even odds on Democrats nominating a democratic socialist in 2028, calling that outcome "the end of America" and warning that Democratic institutions currently hold more consolidated influence than the GOP in some arenas.

Thiel's Relationship With Vance

Thiel has been an influential figure in Vance's career. Vance worked at Mithril Capital, the firm Thiel co‑founded, and the two first met while at Yale Law School in 2011. In a retrospective for The Lamp, Vance said Thiel's talk at Yale Law was a formative moment that helped shape his view of achievement and ambition.

Although Thiel largely stayed out of the 2024 presidential cycle, he has been an active backer in other contests: he donated $15 million to a pro‑Vance super PAC during the 2022 Ohio Senate primary and gave $3 million this year to a group opposing California's proposed wealth tax.

Broader Context And Reactions

Other conservative figures have weighed in on the Vance–Rubio question. Commentator Ben Shapiro said he would bet on Vance in prediction markets like Kalshi and called a Rubio challenge a political "prisoner's dilemma."

Outside U.S. politics, Thiel has expanded his interests overseas: reports say he bought a $12 million estate in Buenos Aires this year as Silicon Valley interest grows around Argentine President Javier Milei's libertarian economic agenda.

What This Means

Thiel's remarks signal that some influential GOP donors are less focused on intra‑party matchups and more worried about the larger electoral landscape and how shifts within the Democratic Party could reshape national politics. His past financial support for Vance underscores the tension between personal political investments and skepticism about broader electoral viability.
