The image, shown at an airport gate during a vacation in Canada, sparked criticism and prompted the credit union to apologize and cite the need to protect members' trust. Jane Smith said she did not intend a political message and expressed regret for any offense. The controversy connects to an August executive order renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America."
Credit Union CEO Removed After AI-Generated 'Lake America' Sweatshirt Photo Sparks Backlash

The chief executive of Family First Credit Union was removed from her position after an AI-generated photo of her and family members wearing sweatshirts labeled "Lake America" circulated online.
Jane Smith originally posted the image to a private Facebook account showing several people in matching sweatshirts at an airport gate while on vacation in Canada. According to reporters at ABC12 in Saginaw, Michigan, Smith's sister later reposted the picture publicly without disclosing that the image had been created with artificial intelligence.
Credit Union Responds
Family First Credit Union announced on its Facebook page that Smith was no longer employed by the organization. In its statement the credit union said:
"We sincerely apologize for the concern, disappointment and pain this situation has caused our members and community. Our responsibility is to act in the best interest of the Credit Union, uphold the trust of our members and continue putting our community first."
Smith's Response
Speaking to ABC12, Smith said the image was not intended as a political statement and described it as an attempt to poke fun at recent news. She said,
"We weren't trying to make a political statement. However, we were kind of poking fun at the fact that one of the Great Lakes' names were getting changed. I am not a person that would ever want to offend or hurt anybody. I do regret having any post that would make someone feel like we don't value them as human beings."
The incident follows an August executive order from President Donald Trump directing that Lake Ontario be renamed "Lake America," an action that has been the subject of public debate.
Context and takeaway: The episode highlights how AI-generated imagery and private social media posts can quickly become public controversies with professional consequences when context is lost or not disclosed.
