Indiana Gets Its First Buc-ee's: Greenwood Approves 74,000‑Sq‑Ft Travel Center

Greenwood city officials approved plans on Sept. 21 for the first Buc-ee's in Indiana after roughly 20 minutes of public comment, most of it opposing the project, according to IndyStar. The decision drew attention because residents voiced concerns about traffic and light pollution, but only two city council members voted against the proposal.
Project Details
City documents show the Buc-ee's site will occupy about 37 acres and include approximately 120 fueling positions plus electric vehicle charging stations. The travel center is planned to measure roughly 74,000 square feet and is expected to employ between 175 and 225 people, with annual salaries estimated between about $40,000 and $51,400.
Community Reaction
Neighbors raised worries about increased traffic, noise and light spill from the large, 24/7 travel center. Greenwood is a suburb located about 11 miles south of downtown Indianapolis; officials said they considered those concerns before approving the development.
Buc-ee's Nationwide Expansion
The Texas-based chain is known for oversized convenience stores and travel centers—often around 75,000 square feet—with hundreds of fueling positions and expansive retail offerings, including extensive snack, jerky and beverage selections. Buc-ee's recently opened its first Arkansas location in Benton (Aug. 17) and launched inaugural stores in Ohio and Arizona this year. In 2025 the chain opened in Virginia, and it debuted in Colorado the previous year.
Buc-ee's has posted additional planned locations on its contact page without firm grand-opening dates: Ruston, Louisiana; Kansas City, Kansas; Gallaway, Tennessee; St. Lucie, Florida; Boerne, Texas; Monroe County, Georgia; Mebane, North Carolina; and Lafayette, Louisiana. The company also lists Ocala, Florida; West Memphis, Arkansas; and Oak Grove, Kentucky for 2029, and Hardeeville, South Carolina for 2031. A Buc-ee's media coordinator said the Murfreesboro, Tennessee location is scheduled to open on Nov. 16.
Next Steps
Developers and city officials will move forward with permitting and site work; traffic and environmental impacts are likely to be monitored as the project progresses. USA TODAY has reached out to Buc-ee's for confirmation of opening dates for the locations listed on the company’s contact page.
