Fact Check: CBC Did Not Publish Article Linking Grocery Payments To White Supremacy

Claims that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) published an article tying routine grocery payment habits to white supremacy are false. No evidence supports that the CBC ever ran such a story; the circulating item appears to be a fabricated screenshot shared on social media.

What Was Claimed

A post by a user named geckogreen on the forum The Donald (archived Sept. 16, 2026) showed a screenshot purporting to be a CBC News article with the headline:

How We Checked

We searched the CBC website directly and via Google site searches, queried Google News and Yahoo News for the headline, and reviewed archived CBC News Ottawa pages for Sept. 28–30, 2023 (the screenshot listed Sept. 29, 2023 as the publication date). None of these searches returned any matching article or evidence that the story ever existed on CBC's platforms.

CBC Response

CBC confirmed the item is fake. In an email to Lead Stories on Sept. 18, 2026, CBC public affairs spokesperson Kerry Kelly wrote:

"There has been an alarming rise in fake ads and news stories appearing on websites and on social media platforms. CBC is committed to fighting disinformation, which deliberately misleads the public and puts at risk their trust in legitimate media outlets. This is an increasingly difficult task however, hindered by the rise in AI generated disinformation and the prevalence of fake ads on social media platforms."

Conclusion

The screenshot claiming a CBC article linking grocery payment behaviors to white supremacy is a fabrication. Extensive searches of CBC and news archives turned up no trace of such a piece, and CBC has publicly denied publishing it. The item appears to be doctored and circulated to mislead readers.
